Things were never like they used to be, which i'm sure you already know if you've gotten this far..........Recording on this tape actually began in the summer of Y2k, and wound it's way into the fall of that same year.....it seems like it was done in little spurts, then spurts of nothing,(nurts?) then more recording, and so on...... from the opening call of the french horn on the 'things theme' to the ending notes of 'things' there's a distinctly peculiar sound on this tape, that makes nobody very happy.........with some good blues. add in and ode to my new apartment, and a phiddle tune with no actual fiddle, plus a dash of lap steel thru the wah wah pedal......salt to taste. we should probably make an editor's note here that there was NO actual playing BY mr. phillips on said phiddle tune, just so we're clear. and that there are no copyright issues involved, you know how he can be about that stuff......there's some real nice mandolin on this tape, and some ok dobro, although, like most players of things resophonic, including the ledgendary bob dunn, the dobro player will ALWAYS whine that his best work has not been captured on tape, and can only be experienced LIVE, not that mr. dunn ever whined, or at least not in that way, but it hopefully should give you some incentive to go to a LIVE SHOW, if you are interested in that sort of thing.....major digressions. special GUEST appearances from the legendary "leigh calabrese" and "ruth rothstein" on "binary".....who doesn't like it binary, i ask you? .......let's continue: ....side two begins with "end of times" which is a wonderfully dense intstrumental, then someone's baby's mama, lost her berf control!! and i'm sure like us, you haaaaaate when that happens......there's some funky ass hawaiian guitar on 'lost child' and some wonderfully bluesy singing on 'inside the blues the love'.......we end up with the bookend like 'things were never like they used to be' which unlike the opener, has actual words........which live HERE along with the words to 'wander wonder' and 'lost child'............we hope you'll pick up a copy of this tape soon, or come to a LIVE show and steal one from the green briefcase............
let's see what the early consensus is:
"kicking ass is classic"- j.e miller, recovering buddhist. talk show addict.
"my playing on an unauthorized cd! hmmm. you'll be hearing from my lawyers"-stacy phillips, resonator.
"is your new apartment really 18 and a half feet wide, or is that a metaphor??"-t. smitz, contractor, poet.
"i'm not so fond of that last part" s. phillips, archduke of dobro.
"sometimes, when you've been driving for a long, long, long time, and you haven't seen anything for miles and miles, you really need to swallow your pride, and just go ahead and pullover at the mcdonald's on the highway of loooove........"-l. felps, reararranger.
